Men’s Sheds originated in Australia in the 1990’s to help combat social isolation and loneliness among men they provide a place for them to connect, socialise and engage in practical activities. In the early 2000’s,
the movement began to expand to other countries, including New Zealand and Ireland. In 2011, the first community-led Men's Shed in the UK was established in Camden Town.
The UK Men’s Sheds Association (UKMSA) was founded in 2013 to represent and support the growing number of ‘Men’s Sheds’ in the UK.
Men’s Sheds often engage in community projects, further strengthening their connection to the local area.
Men's Sheds provide a space for men to socialise, learn new skills, work on projects, and share their experiences in a relaxed and supportive environment.
For a few years, Castle Gardens had an arrangement with the Whitehouse Centre in Sherborne whereby they would send them their broken pallets and they in turn, turned them into kindling wood, which was bought back and sold on to their customers. It was a perfect solution to an environmental problem with great community co-operation.Due to government policy changes, the Whitehouse Centre was forced to close and a home was found at Castle Gardens, and aptly named, ‘The Green Shed’. During the Covid -19 lockdown, ‘The Green Shed’ closed but Guy Patterson, a local councillor proposed the implementation of a Men’s Shed to Mike Burks, MD of the ‘Gardens Group’.
